Amazon is targeting a workforce of 250,000 employees in the United States for the 2024 holiday season, matching its goal from the previous year.

The company’s hiring plans encompass full-time, part-time, and seasonal positions in its fulfillment and transportation sectors, according to Sandy Gordon, Amazon’s Vice President responsible for employee experience within its global operations.

Amazon recently announced a $1.50 increase in hourly wages for its U.S. hourly employees, raising the average base pay to over $22 per hour. Seasonal workers will earn a minimum of $18 per hour, while full-time seasonal employees will receive health-care benefits from their first day of employment.

Amazon emphasizes that seasonal employment often leads to long-term opportunities. On average, seasonal employees who continue with the company experience a 15% increase in pay within their initial three years of employment.

Other major retailers are also supplementing their workforce with seasonal employees, though at similar levels to previous years. Target, for instance, plans to hire 100,000 seasonal workers, matching its strategy from the past two years.

Amazon’s overall employment base reached 1.54 million as of June 2024, spanning corporate, tech, warehouse, and transportation roles. This represents a 5% annual increase, albeit lower than the company’s previous peak of over 1.62 million employees two years prior.

Economic experts anticipate a varied holiday season for the retail sector. Adobe’s retail analytics wing predicts an 8.4% rise in seasonal online sales within the U.S., exceeding $240 billion, nearly double the growth rate of last year. The firm, however, notes that sales gains may be influenced by significant discounting amidst persistent inflation.

Labor market dynamics and the adoption of robotics are also shaping the hiring landscape. “Transportation, shipping, and warehousing industries may experience subdued seasonal hiring surges due to ongoing workforce stabilization and increased automation,” observed Andrew Challenger, Senior Vice President of outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.
