Amazon has entered the ultra-discount e-commerce arena with its new mobile-only platform Amazon Haul, positioning itself to compete directly with Chinese retailers Temu and Shein. The beta launch represents Amazon’s strategic move into a rapidly expanding market segment that has transformed online shopping into an almost game-like experience.

The new platform exclusively offers items priced under $20, with most products available at significantly lower price points. In a departure from Amazon’s usual emphasis on rapid delivery, Haul implements extended shipping times of one to two weeks for orders. This approach mirrors the business model of competitors like Temu, which is projected to increase its U.S. e-commerce market share from 0.7% to 2.3% between 2023 and 2024.

Currently accessible only through the Amazon mobile app by searching for “Haul,” the platform employs familiar discount shopping tactics, including playful messaging that encourages customers to reach free shipping thresholds and earn additional discounts. The minimum purchase requirement for free shipping is set at $25.

The shopping experience on Amazon Haul presents users with an extensive array of low-cost items, from $4.99 weightlifting wrist straps to $2.99 outdoor pillow covers. While the selection is vast, finding desirable items among the offerings can require some dedication. The platform currently operates independently from Amazon’s main marketplace and doesn’t utilize the company’s
sophisticated recommendation algorithms or customer purchase history to personalize the shopping experience.

A test order on the platform yielded five items totaling $27.75 before tax, including practical items such as cable organizers, mesh storage pouches, a phone stand, and a small tool kit. With tax, the final cost came to $30.62, with delivery scheduled for approximately one week later.

This venture represents a significant shift for Amazon, as it attempts to capture a share of the growing market for ultra-low-priced goods that has been dominated by Chinese platforms. The success of companies like Temu and Shein, particularly among younger consumers and TikTok users, has created a new retail category that Amazon can no longer ignore.

The platform’s current limitations, particularly its separation from Amazon’s main shopping ecosystem and lack of personalization features, suggest room for future enhancement. The absence of integration with Amazon’s sophisticated recommendation system stands out as a notable area for potential improvement that could significantly boost user engagement and sales.

For many traditional Amazon customers, the extended delivery times and budget-focused product selection mark a departure from the
rapid-delivery Prime experience they’re accustomed to. However, the platform’s appeal lies in its ability to provide multiple items at extremely competitive prices, even if it means waiting longer for delivery.

Amazon Haul’s launch indicates the e-commerce giant’s recognition of changing consumer shopping habits, particularly among younger demographics who prioritize price over delivery speed. While the platform is still in its early stages, it represents Amazon’s attempt to adapt to evolving market dynamics and maintain its competitive edge in the e-commerce landscape.

The success of this new venture will likely depend on Amazon’s ability to refine the shopping experience, potentially by incorporating more of its advanced technological capabilities while maintaining the attractive price points that make ultra-discount shopping platforms appealing to cost-conscious consumers.
