A Seattle-based technology company called Ambassador is gaining momentum in the conversational commerce space, bolstered by the recent addition of several former Zipwhip executives to its leadership team. The company, which specializes in customer referral and rewards program software, helps brands build stronger customer relationships and drive increased spending through its innovative platform.

Ambassador currently serves more than 200 clients, including major corporations such as Verizon, H&R Block, and Kaplan, and generates approximately $3 million in annual recurring revenue. The 25-person company has attracted significant attention from former leaders of Zipwhip, the successful business messaging startup that Twilio acquired for $850 million.

Several key figures from Zipwhip have thrown their support behind Ambassador, both financially and operationally. These include Hank Skorny, Zipwhip’s former chairman, and John Larson, one of Zipwhip’s co-founders, who have both invested in the venture. James Lapic, who co-founded and served as CTO at Zipwhip, has joined as an investor and technical advisor, while Ravi Angadi, Zipwhip’s former chief product officer, has taken on the role of interim chief product officer at Ambassador.

Larson, who has assumed an operational position within Ambassador, emphasized the company’s strategic positioning in the current technological landscape. He highlighted Ambassador’s customer-led growth model and its development of a three-sided marketplace that enables customers to share product experiences and receive rewards, similar to established influencers.

At the helm of Ambassador is CEO Geoff McDonald, known for previously co-founding Seattle startup Element Data. McDonald acquired Ambassador from Intrado in 2021 and has since focused on growing the business, moving away from his previous venture, ContextLink.

The company is currently finalizing a $4.5 million convertible note, which contributes to its total funding of $9.5 million to date. Ambassador has attracted investment from numerous prominent
Seattle-based investors, including Paul Stahura, Geoff Entress, Archibald Cox, Jr., Andrew Bennett, Steve Hamerslag, and Henry Albright.

The platform leverages artificial intelligence advancements and cutting-edge messaging technology to enhance its service offerings. Ambassador’s software enables businesses to implement and manage customer referral programs effectively, creating a more engaging and rewarding experience for both brands and their customers.

The company’s growth comes at a time when conversational commerce and customer engagement technologies are becoming increasingly important for businesses seeking to maintain competitive advantages in the digital marketplace. By focusing on referral-based growth and customer rewards, Ambassador is positioning itself at the intersection of social commerce and customer loyalty, two rapidly evolving sectors in the technology industry.

Ambassador’s expansion and recent leadership additions reflect a broader trend in the Seattle technology ecosystem, where successful executives from established companies are contributing their expertise and resources to promising newer ventures. This pattern of
reinvestment and knowledge transfer continues to strengthen the region’s position as a hub for innovative technology companies.

The company’s focus on creating tools that enable customers to share and be rewarded for their brand experiences represents a modern approach to word-of-mouth marketing, adapted for today’s digital environment. With its growing customer base and strong backing from experienced industry veterans, Ambassador appears well-positioned to capitalize on the increasing demand for sophisticated customer engagement solutions.
