Dave Clark, former Amazon executive and CEO of Flexport, has launched a new supply chain technology startup, Auger. The company has secured $100 million in Series A funding from Oak HC/FT, a venture capital firm known for investments in healthcare and fintech.

Auger aims to provide an AI-powered system for businesses to improve their supply chain operations. The system will unify data, identify inefficiencies, offer real-time insights, and automate processes.

Clark, who now resides in the Seattle area, emphasized the region’s abundant supply chain expertise as a key factor in establishing Auger. The startup will mainly target large Fortune 100 companies with complex supply chains involving manufacturing, distribution, and retail operations.

Auger estimates a $25 billion addressable market for supply chain technology, which is projected to grow by 20% annually. Clark believes there is significant opportunity for innovation in this space, as many companies still rely on outdated systems.

Oak HC/FT’s investment will enable Auger to assemble its team, develop its technology platform, and consider acquisitions of companies with relevant technology and talent.

Clark’s reputation at Amazon reflects his focus on efficiency and problem-solving. Initiatives he led included the Delivery Service Partners program, Prime Air cargo fleet, and branded tractor-trailers.

Despite his extensive industry experience, Clark acknowledges that founding Auger is a new venture for him. He aims to build a company that combines the best elements from his previous experiences.

Following his resignation from Flexport in 2023, Clark initially intended to focus on personal matters and reflection. However, he eventually decided to launch Auger, driven by his passion for solving supply chain challenges.

Auger is headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, and plans to grow to 20-30 employees within six months. Clark emphasizes the importance of in-person collaboration in the company’s early stages.

While Auger shares some similarities with Flexport, Clark notes that Flexport’s focus on global trade made it challenging to shift to a technology-focused approach.

Clark connected with Oak HC/FT through a recruiter and was impressed by their long-term investment strategy and shared philosophy.

Despite the presence of well-funded competitors like Project44, FourKites, and Altana, Clark believes that innovation and market opportunity remain significant in the supply chain technology sector. He is confident that Auger can address the widespread reliance on spreadsheets in supply chain management.
