A widespread Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage on Monday created significant disruptions in the sports world, particularly affecting ticket access for several major sporting events. The technical issues impacted Ticketmaster’s operations, causing problems for fans attempting to manage their tickets for multiple games.

The outage’s effects were particularly felt ahead of a crucial Game 7 MLB playoff matchup between the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre in Toronto. The Blue Jays organization had to issue a public statement advising fans to temporarily halt any ticket management activities while the technical issues were being addressed. Several hours later, the team announced that ticket management capabilities had been restored to normal functioning.

The disruption extended beyond baseball, affecting NFL games as well. The Seattle Seahawks, scheduled to host the Houston Texans for Monday Night Football, reported that the outage was interfering with access to Ticketmaster, their Account Manager system, and the Seahawks Mobile App. Similarly, the Detroit Lions experienced ticketing complications for their Monday Night Football game.

The impact reached international sports, with the Premier League announcing that its Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, used for making offside calls, would be unavailable for the match between West Ham and Brentford due to the AWS disruption.

The outage began around midnight Pacific time in AWS’s Northern Virginia (US-EAST-1) region, which serves as the company’s oldest and largest cloud infrastructure hub. According to AWS, the root cause was traced to a malfunction in an “underlying internal subsystem responsible for monitoring the health of our network load balancers.” Initial reports indicated the problem stemmed from a DNS resolution issue with AWS’s DynamoDB service, essentially causing failures in the internet’s directory system for locating database services.

The disruption affected major platforms including Facebook, Snapchat, Coinbase, and Amazon’s own services before being fully resolved by 3 p.m. PT. The incident has renewed discussions about the internet’s heavy dependence on AWS infrastructure and highlighted potential vulnerabilities in many organizations’ backup systems, as numerous sites appeared unable to quickly switch to alternative regions or cloud providers during the outage.
