Brad Gerstner: OpenAI’s Path to Transparency and Success: A Call for Public Listing

Altimeter Capital’s Brad Gerstner, a recent investor in OpenAI’s $6.6 billion fundraising round, shared his perspectives on the company’s future at the Madrona IA Summit.
Gerstner emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability for companies, particularly those in the AI space. He advocated for OpenAI to consider becoming a publicly traded company, providing broader access to its potential growth and societal impact.
According to Gerstner, OpenAI’s current nonprofit structure may limit its accountability and ability to address AI’s potential consequences, such as job displacement and social disruption. He expressed admiration for the caution exercised by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and CFO Sarah Friar in their engagement with key stakeholders, particularly in Washington, D.C.
Gerstner also touched on the competition between OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot. He predicted that Copilot would face challenges in gaining market share against ChatGPT, but acknowledged Microsoft’s significant stake in OpenAI as a mitigating factor.
