Breakthrough MicroRNA Data Strengthens NeuroSense’s Revolutionary ALS Treatment Potential
Sponsored · Market Discovery ContentNeuroSense Therapeutics (NASDAQ: NRSN)* made waves this week at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Meeting with groundbreaking microRNA data that could transform our understanding of ALS treatment. The clinical-stage biotech company revealed compelling new evidence demonstrating how their lead drug candidate PrimeC modulates key biological pathways in ALS patients, providing a molecular explanation for the impressive clinical benefits observed in their Phase 2b PARADIGM trial.
The data unveiled at the AAN meeting shows that PrimeC consistently downregulates 161 microRNAs across all timepoints in treated patients, with no significant changes detected in the placebo group. This finding provides critical insight into the drug’s mechanism of action, particularly its effect on ALS-related microRNAs like miR-199 and miR-181, which are associated with neuroinflammation, reduced neuronal survival, and mortality risk in ALS patients.
“What stood out to us was the consistent modulation of key miRNAs closely associated with ALS biology,” said Professor Noam Shomron of Tel Aviv University, who collaborated on the research. “Observing these changes as part of a rigorous and well-controlled analysis was particularly compelling. It speaks to the potential of PrimeC to directly influence key molecular mechanisms in ALS.”
The microRNA findings align with previously reported clinical outcomes from the 18-month PARADIGM study, where PrimeC demonstrated a 33% reduction in disease progression and a 58% improvement in survival rates. These remarkable results position PrimeC as potentially one of the most effective treatments yet developed for ALS, a devastating neurodegenerative disease that currently has few therapeutic options.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects approximately 30,000 patients in the US and Canada and another 30,000 in Europe. The disease causes progressive paralysis and typically leads to death within 2-5 years of diagnosis. The global ALS treatment market is projected to reach $1-1.2 billion by 2030, creating a significant opportunity for effective therapies.
NeuroSense’s approach with PrimeC represents a paradigm shift in ALS treatment. Unlike traditional single-target therapies, PrimeC combines two FDA-approved drugs – ciprofloxacin and celecoxib – in a novel extended-release formulation designed to simultaneously address multiple disease mechanisms. This multi-targeted strategy tackles neuroinflammation, iron metabolism dysregulation, and microRNA dysregulation, all key factors in ALS progression.
The company’s momentum extends beyond the laboratory. In December 2024, NeuroSense entered into a binding term sheet with a leading global pharmaceutical company to advance PrimeC’s development and commercialization. The agreement, expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2025, includes substantial upfront payment, funding for Phase 3 clinical trials, milestone payments, and a tiered royalty structure reaching double-digit percentages on annual net sales.
“We are excited by these results from the PARADIGM trial, which provide further compelling support of PrimeC’s potential to modify disease progression in people living with ALS,” said Alon Ben-Noon, CEO of NeuroSense Therapeutics. “The ability of PrimeC to affect miRNA expression and the underlying disease pathways not only validates our approach but positions PrimeC as a promising therapeutic candidate for ALS.”
NeuroSense is also pursuing an expedited regulatory pathway in Canada, with plans to submit a dossier to Health Canada in Q3 2025 and potentially secure approval by Q1 2026. The company estimates the Canadian market opportunity alone at $100-150 million in peak annual revenue.
Following productive discussions with the FDA, NeuroSense is on track to begin a Phase 3 clinical trial in mid-2025. The study will enroll approximately 300 ALS patients, with two-thirds receiving PrimeC and one-third receiving a placebo for 12 months, followed by an open-label extension where all participants will receive PrimeC.
Wall Street has taken notice of NeuroSense’s progress. Alliance Global Partners maintains a “Buy” rating on the company with a $7.50 price target, representing significant upside potential from current levels.
As NeuroSense advances toward pivotal trials and potential early commercialization, the latest microRNA data strengthens the scientific foundation of their approach. For the thousands of patients and families affected by ALS, these developments represent more than just promising research – they offer renewed hope for a disease that has long defied effective treatment.
