A Seattle-based company called Electric Era has secured $5.05 million through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program to deploy six charging stations across Washington state’s interstate and highway system. The startup specializes in manufacturing DC fast-charging infrastructure equipped with large-scale battery systems for power storage and distribution.

The Washington Department of Transportation distributed the grants, which amounted to $12.16 million in total and will fund charging infrastructure at 13 separate sites. Additional grant recipients included Tesla, EVgo, EV Gateway, and Energy Northwest, a utility consortium.

In January, the Trump administration froze NEVI funding, despite Congress appropriating these funds in 2021 specifically for expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure along major U.S. highways. Washington state joined other states in filing legal action against the freeze. Earlier this week, a federal judge determined that withholding these funds was unlawful.

This isn’t Electric Era’s first time receiving state support for charging infrastructure. The company had previously been awarded funding through Washington’s Climate Commitment Act program, which supported their installation of publicly accessible charging stations.

The NEVI program represents a significant federal investment in electric vehicle infrastructure, designed to address range anxiety and support the transition to electric transportation. By establishing charging stations along major transportation corridors, the initiative aims to make long-distance electric vehicle travel more practical and accessible for drivers.

Electric Era’s technology distinguishes itself through the integration of substantial battery storage capacity alongside the charging equipment. This approach helps manage power delivery more efficiently and can store energy during off-peak times for use during high-demand periods. The battery-integrated design can also help reduce strain on the electrical grid while providing faster, more reliable charging for electric vehicle drivers.

The legal challenge brought by Washington and other states proved successful when Monday’s federal court ruling declared the
administration’s action to withhold the appropriated funds illegal. This decision allows the previously frozen funding to move forward, enabling projects like Electric Era’s charging station deployment to proceed as planned.

The six charging locations that Electric Era will develop using the grant funding will be strategically positioned along Washington’s interstate and highway network. These sites will serve both local drivers and those traveling longer distances through the state, contributing to a more comprehensive charging network.

Washington’s commitment to expanding electric vehicle infrastructure extends beyond federal programs. The state’s Climate Commitment Act has provided additional resources for companies like Electric Era to build out public charging capabilities, demonstrating a multi-faceted approach to supporting electric vehicle adoption.

The $12.16 million in total funding distributed by the Washington Department of Transportation represents a substantial investment in the state’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure. With 13 locations receiving support and multiple providers involved, the program will significantly expand charging availability across Washington’s major travel routes.

Electric Era’s receipt of over $5 million in NEVI funding positions the company as a major player in Washington’s electric vehicle infrastructure buildout. As one of several recipients including established names like Tesla and EVgo, Electric Era will contribute substantially to addressing the charging needs of the state’s growing electric vehicle population.

The restoration of NEVI funding following the federal court decision ensures that these critical infrastructure projects can move forward without further delay, supporting both the electric vehicle industry and the broader transition to cleaner transportation options across Washington state and the nation.
