Game developer Firewalk Studios, located in Bellevue, Washington, will cease operations following an announcement by Sony on Tuesday. The closure comes just 18 months after Sony’s acquisition of the studio and marks the end of a brief but tumultuous chapter in the company’s history.

The studio’s only release, Concord, a multiplayer action title for PlayStation 5 and Windows, experienced an exceptionally short lifespan. The game, which launched on August 23, saw its servers shut down after merely two weeks due to underwhelming sales and low player engagement. Sony took the unusual step of offering full refunds to all purchasers.

In a company-wide communication, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hermen Hulst addressed the situation, acknowledging the challenges faced in the competitive player-versus-player first-person shooter market. Hulst emphasized that while Concord failed to meet its targets, the experience would inform Sony’s future approaches to live service gaming initiatives.

The closure will result in workforce reductions in Washington state, though the exact number of affected employees remains undisclosed. The decision also impacts Neon Koi, a German mobile development studio, which will be shut down alongside Firewalk.

Firewalk Studios emerged in 2018 as an inaugural project of
ProbablyMonsters, a Bellevue-based collective focused on creating sustainable working environments in game development. The studio operated under this umbrella until April 2023, when Sony acquired it for an undisclosed amount. Shortly after the acquisition, Firewalk revealed Concord during a PlayStation Showcase event in May.

The game’s launch strategy raised eyebrows in the industry, as Sony opted for minimal marketing support and positioned it at a $39.99 price point. This decision proved problematic, particularly given that Concord’s main competitors in the genre, including established titles like Valorant and Overwatch 2, operate on free-to-play models.

Firewalk’s studio director, Ryan Ellis, commented on the situation in September through PlayStation’s official blog, noting that while certain aspects of the game resonated with players, other elements and the launch strategy fell short of expectations. The statement preceded the decision to take the game offline permanently.

The studio’s closure adds to a concerning trend in the gaming industry, which has witnessed extensive job losses throughout 2024, with over 10,000 professionals affected. Industry analysts attribute this widespread downturn to a market correction following the unprecedented growth during the COVID-19 pandemic, when stay-at-home orders drove increased gaming consumption.

The rapid shutdown of both Concord and Firewalk Studios stands out as an unusually aggressive move in the industry, prompting speculation about additional factors that may have influenced Sony’s decision. The company’s handling of the situation, particularly the swift server closure and immediate refund offers, has generated significant discussion among industry observers and fans alike.

This development represents a significant shift in Sony’s approach to live service games and raises questions about the challenges faced by new entrants in the competitive multiplayer gaming space. The closure of Firewalk Studios serves as a stark reminder of the volatile nature of the gaming industry and the difficulties in establishing new intellectual properties in crowded market segments.
