Pradnya Desh, CEO and founder of legal-tech startup Advocat, is taking her problem-solving skills from the tech world to local government with her candidacy for Bellevue City Council. The former U.S. diplomat and current college board trustee believes her experience in technology entrepreneurship could bring fresh perspectives to civic leadership.

“Government needs the problem-solving approach we use in tech,” explains Desh, whose company leverages AI to provide affordable legal document services to small businesses. “In the tech industry, we identify problems, build solutions, gather user feedback, and continuously improve – that’s the mindset I want to bring to public service.”

Running against incumbent Councilmember Jared Nieuwenhuis for one of five open seats on the seven-member at-large council, Desh has garnered support from the King County Democrats among others. Her campaign platform addresses critical regional issues including affordable housing, transit expansion, social equity, and public safety.

Desh emphasizes her commitment to strengthening the region’s startup ecosystem, though she distinguishes her approach from the aggressive tactics sometimes associated with tech leaders entering government. “Understanding the problem deeply is crucial in tech,” she notes. “You need to comprehend user pain points and the environment before building solutions.”

The candidate sees Bellevue’s growing tech presence – with major players like Amazon, Meta, and various tech companies establishing offices there – as an opportunity for development. She advocates for better connecting the various elements that support startup success: funding sources, customer bases, and support networks.

However, Desh expresses concern about recent state business tax measures that could potentially drive away tech companies. “While we’re trying to establish ourselves as a startup hub to rival the Bay Area, these tax policies pull us in the opposite direction,” she says, acknowledging the legislature’s budget challenges but calling for alternative solutions.

With three children, including two studying at the University of Washington, Desh views the City Council position as a starting point for broader public service. She aims to address immediate local challenges while building experience for potential higher office in the future.

The candidate points to infrastructure and housing as key priorities for maintaining Bellevue’s competitiveness in the tech sector. She believes major tech companies have both an obligation and vested interest in improving community infrastructure and transportation networks for their employees.

Desh sees Bellevue as particularly well-positioned for implementing change, noting the city’s capacity for faster action compared to other municipalities. She envisions creating a more business-friendly environment while maintaining the city’s livability.

Her campaign represents a growing trend of tech industry leaders seeking to apply their business experience to government challenges. The approach emphasizes data-driven decision-making and iterative problem-solving methods commonly used in startup environments.

As part of her campaign outreach, Desh has scheduled a launch event at Bellevue’s Robinswood House for June 19, where she plans to further discuss her vision for bringing tech-sector efficiency to local government operations.

Her unique combination of experience – spanning international diplomacy, legal technology entrepreneurship, and education leadership – forms the foundation of her pitch to voters. Desh argues that this diverse background, coupled with her startup founder’s mindset, makes her well-suited to address Bellevue’s evolving needs as a growing tech hub.
