Marysville, Washington-based space technology company Gravitics has secured significant backing from the U.S. Space Force to develop and demonstrate an innovative orbital carrier system. The project, supported through the Space Force’s SpaceWERX STRATFI program, could receive funding of up to $60 million from both government and private sector sources.

The orbital carrier is designed to function as a space-based launch platform, capable of deploying maneuverable space vehicles in orbit. This revolutionary approach aims to overcome traditional launch limitations by enabling operators to select deployment orbits on demand, potentially transforming how space assets are positioned and utilized.

“The Orbital Carrier represents a fundamental shift in space deployment capabilities,” explained Gravitics Chief Executive Officer Colin Doughan. “By establishing what essentially amounts to a launch pad in orbit, we’re creating new possibilities for responsive space operations.”

The carrier’s design features a cylindrical configuration that can accommodate multiple spacecraft with their solar arrays in a stowed position. While specific development timelines haven’t been disclosed, the newly announced funding agreement will provide Gravitics with the essential resources to advance the platform from concept to
demonstration.

This latest development builds upon Gravitics’ previous collaboration with the Space Force, following a $1.7 million contract awarded by SpaceWERX approximately one year ago. That initial agreement focused on adapting Gravitics’ commercial space station module architecture to enhance the Space Force’s Tactically Responsive Space initiative, which aims to improve rapid-response capabilities in orbital operations.

The timing of this investment is particularly significant, coming amid growing concerns from U.S. military leadership about orbital defense capabilities. Recent weeks have seen military officials expressing increased worry about Russian and Chinese satellite maneuvers in low Earth orbit, with some experts comparing these activities to orbital dogfighting scenarios.

The strategic importance of such capabilities was highlighted by Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman during a recent symposium in Denver. Saltzman emphasized the need for expanded options to ensure U.S. superiority in potential future orbital conflicts, underscoring the strategic value of projects like Gravitics’ Orbital Carrier.

The development of this orbital carrier system represents a crucial step forward in military space capabilities, offering a potential solution for rapid deployment of space assets in response to emerging threats. By providing a flexible, on-orbit launch platform, the system could significantly enhance the Space Force’s ability to respond to evolving situations in space.

This advancement in space technology also demonstrates the growing partnership between private industry and military space operations. The substantial funding commitment through the STRATFI program reflects the Space Force’s confidence in Gravitics’ innovative approach to solving complex challenges in space operations.

The orbital carrier project showcases the evolution of space technology beyond traditional launch methods, potentially establishing new paradigms for space vehicle deployment and operations. As geopolitical tensions extend into the space domain, systems like the Orbital Carrier could play an increasingly vital role in maintaining strategic capabilities and deterrence in orbit.

For Gravitics, this support from the Space Force represents a major milestone in their development of space infrastructure technologies, building upon their existing work in commercial space station modules and expanding their role in national security space operations.
