Meta has acquired [Conductor](https://www.axios.com/2026/11/04/meta-acquires-ai-coding-startup-conductor?ref=venture-block.com), a two-year-old startup whose Mac app lets software engineers run several AI coding agents side by side, each in its own copy of a codebase. Axios first reported the deal on Wednesday, Meta [confirmed it to TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/11/04/meta-acquires-ai-coding-startup-conductor/?ref=venture-block.com), and neither side disclosed financial terms.

The purchase landed the same day OpenAI said it would [acquire Pierre Computer Company](https://openai.com/index/openai-to-acquire-pierre/?ref=venture-block.com), a developer-tools startup whose code review libraries already sit inside the Codex app. Two of the largest AI labs buying the plumbing around coding agents within hours of each other shows where the competition for developers has moved: from the models themselves to the tools engineers use to direct and check their work.

## What Conductor built

Conductor's pitch is parallel work. A developer creates isolated copies of a repository, assigns a coding agent to each one, and then reviews and merges what comes back, according to the company's [Series A announcement](https://www.conductor.build/blog/series-a?ref=venture-block.com) in March. The agents are not Conductor's own. [SiliconANGLE reports](https://siliconangle.com/2026/11/04/meta-acquires-ai-coding-startup-conductor-whose-app-runs-several-coding-agents-at-once/?ref=venture-block.com) that the app supports tools such as Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex, with users paying for those agents through their own subscriptions and keys.

A hosted version, Conductor Cloud, runs agents in sandboxed virtual machines so they can keep working for hours, and users can check on them from an iPhone app, SiliconANGLE says. The company's [website](https://www.conductor.build/?ref=venture-block.com) says it is trusted by more than 100,000 builders.

Meta's engineers were already among them. In March, Conductor listed Meta alongside Google, Amazon, Spotify, Datadog, Ramp and others as companies with dozens of engineers using the product, and said its user base had grown tenfold since January.

## A small company with a short history

Conductor, formally Melty Inc., was founded in 2024 by chief executive Charlie Holtz and chief technology officer Jackson de Campos. It launched its app in July 2025 and raised a $22 million Series A in March 2026 from Matrix and Spark Capital. Matrix partner Ilya Sukhar, who also led the seed round, joined the board. Y Combinator and founders of Notion and Linear also invested, the company said at the time.

According to sources who spoke to Axios, Meta expects the team's speed at shipping product and its focus on developer experience to help it build its next generation of AI coding tools. On X, Holtz said he was looking forward to working with Alexandr Wang, Meta's chief AI officer, and Nat Friedman, head of product at Meta Superintelligence Labs, TechCrunch reported.

The deal adds to Meta's push into coding. TechCrunch notes that Meta launched its own coding agent, Muse Code, in August. Conductor's model-agnostic approach is different: it was built to manage other companies' agents, and it is not yet clear whether the new product will keep that design or centre on Meta's models.

## OpenAI's parallel move

Pierre sells Code Storage, a service that lets apps store code and track its history using Git, and maintains open-source libraries called Trees and Diffs that Codex uses to browse files and show changes, OpenAI said. OpenAI plans to fold Code Storage's features into Codex, keep Pierre's open-source projects open, and let existing customers keep using the service after closing. That deal still needs regulatory approval, and the two companies remain independent until then.

Axios framed the two acquisitions as complementary halves of the same problem: Pierre handles storing and managing AI-generated code, while Conductor coordinates multiple agents writing it at once. OpenAI had already announced plans in June to buy Ona, which runs coding agents in cloud sandboxes, according to Axios. Similar multi-agent setups are showing up elsewhere too, including [DeepSeek's open-source Super-agent](https://venture-block.com/deepseek-super-agent-open-source-coding-agent/), which runs parallel coding jobs from team chats. Anthropic, whose Claude Code was among the agents Conductor supported, is meanwhile preparing to go public, as its [IPO filing](https://venture-block.com/anthropic-s1-ipo-nasdaq-ant-revenue/) showed.

## What happens to Conductor users

The current product is being wound down in stages, according to Conductor's [announcement](https://www.conductor.build/announcement?ref=venture-block.com). As of November 4, new users can no longer sign up or download the app, and existing pro subscribers get paid features free. Conductor Cloud goes read-only on November 13 and shuts down on November 20, when the company begins deleting cloud user data. Users can move cloud workspaces to their Macs or export an archive before then, and active subscribers will get refunds.

The local Mac app will keep receiving new models and critical bug fixes until early 2027, when it starts winding down. The company says it has never sold or trained on Conductor user data and will delete all user data when the app shuts down. Holtz wrote that the team plans to have something new for users by early next year.
