Microsoft Unleashes New AI Agents to Transform Dynamics 365 and Challenge Salesforce

Microsoft has unveiled a suite of new AI agents for its Dynamics 365 business applications, intensifying its competition with Salesforce in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. The
announcement, made at Microsoft’s “AI Tour” event in London, introduces 10 autonomous AI tools designed to handle tasks across various business functions including sales, service, finance, and supply chain operations.
These AI agents represent Microsoft’s vision for the future of business software, with Jared Spataro, chief marketing officer for Microsoft’s AI at Work initiatives, describing them as “the new apps for an AI-powered world.” Spataro envisions organizations utilizing a diverse array of agents, ranging from simple prompt-and-response tools to fully autonomous systems, to execute and manage business processes on behalf of individuals, teams, or entire departments.
The timing of Microsoft’s announcement is noteworthy, coming just days before Salesforce’s planned general availability of its competing Agentforce autonomous AI technology for sales and service on October 25. This move underscores the ongoing rivalry between the two tech giants, who have a complex relationship as both partners and competitors in the enterprise software market.
Recent weeks have seen Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff openly criticizing Microsoft’s Copilot AI technology, claiming it disappoints business customers and poses security risks to their data. This public sparring highlights the high stakes in the AI-driven business software arena.
Microsoft’s new AI agents span several categories, including sales, operations, and service. In the sales domain, the company is introducing a Sales Qualification Agent to prioritize leads and a Sales Order Agent to streamline order intake. For operations, a Supplier Communications Agent and a Financial Reconciliation Agent aim to optimize supply chain and financial processes. Customer service will benefit from a Customer Intent Agent and a Customer Knowledge Management Agent, designed to automate case management and update knowledge bases.
Additional agents focus on specific business functions, such as financial reporting, transaction matching, and time and expense management. Microsoft plans to make these AI agents available in public preview for Dynamics 365 users starting later this year and extending into early 2024.
The introduction of these autonomous AI agents is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to leverage AI across its product portfolio, including GitHub, Windows, and Microsoft 365. This push comes as the company seeks to drive growth in its Dynamics 365 business, which generated approximately $6.5 billion in revenue during the 2024 fiscal year – a significant increase from previous years but still a small fraction of Microsoft’s overall annual revenue of more than $245 billion.
Microsoft’s investment in AI technology reflects a broader industry trend towards more autonomous and capable AI systems. By giving AI the ability to complete tasks independently, rather than simply assisting human users, Microsoft is aiming to revolutionize how businesses operate and interact with technology.
As the AI landscape continues to evolve, the competition between Microsoft and Salesforce is likely to intensify. Both companies are betting heavily on AI to drive innovation and capture market share in the enterprise software space. With these new AI agents, Microsoft is making a bold statement about its vision for the future of work and its commitment to leading the charge in AI-driven business solutions.
