Microsoft’s Recall: AI-Powered Feature Under Security Scrutiny

Microsoft’s Recall, an upcoming AI-powered feature, has been met with scrutiny from security experts and policymakers. In response, Microsoft has released details about Recall’s security and privacy measures.

Recall uses advanced neural processing units to capture encrypted snapshots of users’ PC activities. These snapshots are only accessible after biometric authentication via Windows Hello. Users may also opt into using Recall and can remove it entirely if desired.

Critics have raised concerns about Recall’s potential for data misuse, especially given Microsoft’s recent emphasis on prioritizing security. Microsoft maintains that Recall’s design and implementation offer robust protection against threats.

David Weston, Microsoft’s VP of Enterprise and OS Security, stated, “Microsoft is committed to making the power of AI accessible while ensuring security and privacy against advanced attacks.”

To address concerns, Microsoft plans to initially release Recall through its Windows Insider program in October, allowing users to provide feedback and assess its security before wider availability.
