The Seattle Seahawks introduced an innovative accessibility solution this season for fans who are blind or have low vision, participating in a trial program featuring technology developed by OneCourt, a startup based in Seattle.

The device from OneCourt employs a combination of haptic feedback and generative audio to convert real-time game play into vibrations that users can track through touch. Fans using the laptop-style device can feel the action unfold beneath their fingers while simultaneously listening to the team’s radio commentary, which is synchronized with virtually no delay, as reported by the Seahawks organization.

The testing took place at Lumen Field in Seattle throughout the season, with participants using the technology during multiple games, including the December 14 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. The Seahawks joined three other NFL franchises—the Jaguars, Vikings, and Falcons—in this accessibility pilot initiative organized by the league.

Users who participated in the trial provided their impressions and feedback regarding the device’s functionality to both the NFL and the Seahawks. This collected information will undergo analysis and inform the development of comprehensive accessibility strategies for in-stadium experiences moving forward.

Jonathan Beane, who serves as the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, emphasized the significance of the program in an official statement. He noted that football reaches its full potential when every fan can participate in the experience. Beane highlighted how the OneCourt trial demonstrated the capacity of cutting-edge technology to enhance engagement for fans with visual impairments, describing the feedback as remarkably positive.

The company behind the technology, OneCourt, was established by a team of graduates from the University of Washington. CEO Jerred Mace leads the group of co-founders who developed the concept.

Before working with the NFL, OneCourt had already made inroads in professional sports accessibility. The NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers became the inaugural professional sports franchise to make OneCourt devices available at all home games, establishing a precedent for integration of this assistive technology in live sporting events.

The device represents a significant advancement in making live sports more accessible to individuals with visual disabilities. By
translating the visual elements of football into tactile sensations, the technology allows fans who cannot see the field to track player movements, ball location, and game progression in real time through touch.

The pilot program reflects broader efforts across professional sports to enhance inclusivity and ensure that fans of all abilities can fully engage with live game experiences. The NFL’s willingness to test and evaluate such technologies demonstrates a commitment to removing barriers that have traditionally prevented some fans from fully enjoying in-stadium attendance.

As the league and participating teams review the results from this season’s testing, the data gathered will likely influence future decisions about implementing accessibility technologies on a wider scale. The success of the pilot could lead to expanded availability of similar devices across more NFL venues and potentially inspire other sports leagues to explore comparable solutions for their fans with visual impairments.
