Amazon has unveiled its latest Kindle Scribe device, featuring several notable upgrades from the previous model. The new e-reader maintains the same 10.2-inch screen size and overall dimensions as its predecessor, but employs a clever design trick to create the illusion of a slimmer profile. By using a two-tone color scheme on the left bezel, Amazon has made the border appear thinner, a technique previously seen on the reMarkable 2 tablet.
The updated Kindle Scribe comes with enhanced functionality, including the ability to take notes directly within e-books and utilize generative AI to summarize handwritten notes. These features will also be available to owners of the original Scribe through a software update, ensuring older devices aren’t left behind.
One area of potential improvement is the writing implement. The first-generation Scribe’s pen was criticized for feeling
insubstantial, but Amazon claims the new Premium Pen offers a more authentic writing experience with improved weight and balance. The device also introduces a soft-tipped eraser designed to mimic the feel of a pencil, though some skepticism remains about its effectiveness.
The launch event featured Panos Panay, formerly of Microsoft’s Surface team and now leading Amazon’s Devices & Services group, presenting the new Scribe. This marks a significant shift for Panay, who was previously associated with a very different type of tablet.
In the broader e-reader market, the reMarkable Paper Pro has garnered attention for its large 11.8-inch display and focus on note-taking. However, it faces challenges such as washed-out colors on its screen and the lack of an integrated e-book store. The Kindle Scribe, while smaller, benefits from seamless access to Amazon’s vast library of digital content.
Amazon is also entering the color e-reader space with the Kindle Colorsoft, though real-world performance remains to be seen. Early images suggest more vivid colors compared to competitors, but hands-on testing will be necessary to confirm this.
The ideal device for many users would combine the best aspects of both the Kindle and reMarkable approaches – a large, black-and-white screen with excellent note-taking capabilities and an integrated e-book store, all at a more affordable price point than current offerings.
The new Kindle Scribe is set to begin shipping on December 4th, with a starting price of $399.99 for the 16GB model including a basic pen. This positions it as a premium device in the e-reader market, competing not just with other e-ink tablets but also with more versatile color tablets and traditional paper notebooks.
As the e-reader market continues to evolve, manufacturers are striving to create devices that can replace both physical books and paper notebooks.
