In a significant move toward sustainable transportation, Seattle’s local government has announced a $1.5 million funding initiative to support the electrification of port-serving truck fleets. The funding will be allocated to Zeem Solutions, a Los Angeles-based company specializing in electric vehicle fleet solutions.

The initiative will enable two local trucking companies, Jet City Trucking LLC and Ephrata Trucking LLC, to add 12 new electric drayage trucks to their operations. These Class 8 heavy-duty vehicles, designed for short-distance freight transport, will primarily serve the Port of Seattle.

This funding builds upon an earlier grant of $5.12 million provided by the Northwest Seaport Alliance to Zeem in July. That investment is supporting the development of a commercial fleet charging depot in SeaTac, Washington, which will serve both the Seattle and Tacoma ports. The facility, scheduled for completion in early 2026, will accommodate daily charging for 250 vehicles and provide overnight parking for 70 vehicles.

The project emerged from Seattle’s Heavy Duty Electric Trucks pilot program, launched in 2023. Zeem’s role includes providing
comprehensive electric vehicle solutions, managing charging
infrastructure, and facilitating funding distribution to local drayage operators.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell emphasized the environmental significance of the initiative, noting that while the port is crucial to the local economy, diesel drayage trucks have been major contributors to pollution in Duwamish Valley communities. “Through the Heavy Duty Electric Trucks Pilot, we’re investing in technology that will ultimately reduce emissions in frontline communities while also supporting drivers to ensure they have real opportunities in the zero-emission economy,” Harrell stated.

The participating trucking companies are expected to begin operating their electric vehicles from the SeaTac Depot by the end of 2026. This initiative represents a strategic step in Seattle’s broader efforts to reduce transportation emissions while maintaining efficient port operations.

The project demonstrates the city’s commitment to environmental sustainability by transitioning heavy-duty transportation to cleaner alternatives, while simultaneously supporting local businesses in adapting to emerging green technologies. This investment in electric infrastructure marks an important milestone in Seattle’s journey toward a more sustainable freight transportation system.
