Seattleites are expressing optimism about their city’s trajectory, as evidenced by a recent survey. The poll, conducted by EMC Research for the Seattle Metro Chamber of Commerce, surveyed 700 registered voters and revealed that 48% believe the city is moving in the right direction, a significant increase from 30% two years ago.

This positive sentiment is also reflected in a quality of life index calculated from survey responses, which rose from 3.89 two years ago to 4.66 on a scale of 1 to 10\. Additionally, fewer residents (46%) are considering relocating from Seattle, indicating a shift away from the pessimism that characterized the city’s post-pandemic recovery efforts.

Despite this optimism, residents still express concerns about crime, homelessness, and affordability. However, there has been a noticeable improvement in perceptions of downtown safety, with more respondents feeling comfortable visiting the area.

To address these concerns and foster the city’s growth, civic leaders are emphasizing the need to improve public safety in downtown Seattle. Mayor Bruce Harrell has announced an increase in the required in-office days for executive branch employees, while major employers like Amazon are mandating a return to in-person work.

While flexibility remains a priority, returning workers to physical workplaces is seen as crucial for the city’s vitality. The survey also revealed that around two-thirds of respondents oppose tax increases as a solution to the city’s $230 million deficit, which Mayor Harrell has addressed in his proposed 2025-26 budget.
