Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) has launched an innovative pilot program testing autonomous shuttle service between its terminal and Sound Transit light rail station, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative at a major U.S. airport.

The 90-day trial employs electric vehicles resembling golf carts, manufactured by Carteav, a company known for providing similar autonomous transportation solutions at resorts and theme parks across the country. These self-driving shuttles utilize advanced navigation systems, sensors, and computer vision technology to safely operate in pedestrian-heavy environments.

During the testing phase, which runs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., each vehicle carries a quality assurance engineer to monitor operations. The autonomous service operates alongside the existing driver-operated cart service that currently serves the route.

The distance between the light rail station and airport terminal spans 950 feet, equivalent to walking one New York City block or taking 379 steps. While this may not seem substantial, airport officials note that travelers have consistently expressed interest in additional transportation options to enhance mobility, accessibility, and convenience along this corridor.

SEA’s implementation of this autonomous shuttle service addresses ongoing passenger concerns about the walking distance. The airport has previously addressed public inquiries about why alternative solutions, such as moving walkways, weren’t initially installed and why the light rail station wasn’t constructed closer to the terminal.

Looking ahead, the Port of Seattle’s Sustainable Airport Master Plan includes provisions for a new ground transportation center featuring an indoor moving walkway, demonstrating the airport’s long-term commitment to improving passenger connectivity.

As part of the evaluation process, airport authorities are gathering passenger feedback through on-site surveys, targeting both pedestrians in the area and individuals who use the autonomous vehicles during the trial period. This data will help inform decisions about the future of the program.

The introduction of self-driving shuttles builds upon SEA’s existing technological initiatives in passenger mobility. The airport already utilizes autonomous electric wheelchairs to assist travelers with mobility challenges, showcasing its ongoing commitment to implementing innovative transportation solutions.

The Carteav vehicles were selected for their proven track record in similar environments where they interact with pedestrians. The shuttles are designed to prioritize safety while carrying both passengers and their luggage between the two locations.

This initiative represents part of a broader effort to enhance the airport’s ground transportation infrastructure and improve the overall passenger experience. As major airports worldwide seek solutions to streamline passenger movements within their facilities, SEA’s autonomous shuttle pilot program could serve as a model for similar implementations at other transportation hubs.

The simultaneous operation of both autonomous and driver-operated services during the pilot period allows airport officials to compare effectiveness and passenger preferences between the two options. This dual-service approach ensures continuous transportation availability while gathering valuable data about the potential for autonomous solutions in airport environments.

As the trial progresses, the Port of Seattle will evaluate various metrics, including passenger satisfaction, operational efficiency, and safety performance, to determine the viability of implementing autonomous shuttles as a permanent transportation solution between the light rail station and terminal.
