Investing in early-stage startups requires risk-tolerant individuals known as angel investors. Seattle, despite its abundance of tech wealth, faces a shortage of these investors.

James Newell, a venture capitalist at Voyager Capital, emphasizes the need for “low-conviction check writers” in Seattle. He draws a comparison to Silicon Valley, where angel investing is more common and prestigious.

Seattle’s culture, which can be reserved and introverted, contributes to the lack of angel investors. Additionally, former tech executives from large corporations may struggle to evaluate and support startups.

“They don’t know what good looks like,” Newell notes. “And they don’t feel the pressure to give back to the ecosystem that created their wealth because it didn’t.”

Angel investors are crucial for startups, providing initial funding and support. Seattle has several initiatives to foster angel activity, including the Seattle Angel Conference and Alliance of Angels.

“There are angel investors here,” Newell says. “But they’re just harder to find.”

Statistics show that Washington state has a lower percentage of pre-seed deals compared to tech hubs like California and Massachusetts.
