A new artificial intelligence-powered e-commerce venture called Spangle has emerged from stealth mode, announcing seed funding from prominent venture capital firms Madrona and Streamlined Ventures. The Seattle-based startup is being led by Maju Kuruvilla, who previously served as CEO of Bolt and held an executive position at Amazon as Vice President.

Spangle aims to revolutionize online retail by implementing AI technology to create more personalized shopping experiences. The company’s innovative approach focuses on enhancing the customer journey from the initial interaction, addressing a significant gap between targeted marketing efforts and the actual shopping experience consumers encounter when visiting e-commerce platforms.

The startup has secured $6 million in funding to date, demonstrating strong investor confidence in its mission to transform digital commerce. Kuruvilla, who departed from his role at Bolt in April 2023 following a board decision, has partnered with co-founder and CTO Fei Wang to develop Spangle’s technology platform. Wang brings valuable experience from his previous position as CTO at Saks OFF 5th and his twelve-year tenure at Amazon.

The leadership team is further strengthened by Karen Moon, who serves as Chief Operating Officer. Moon’s background includes serving as CEO of Trendalytics and extensive experience in consumer startup investments.

Kuruvilla has identified a crucial challenge in current e-commerce personalization efforts, noting that their effectiveness has been limited by insufficient customer data and backward-looking analysis. He emphasizes that individual merchants typically lack adequate customer information to make accurate predictions about shopping preferences. The company’s solution draws inspiration from social media platforms, recognizing that modern consumers seek both relevance and variety in their shopping experiences.

Madrona’s managing director Scott Jacobsen expressed enthusiasm for Spangle’s potential, highlighting how the platform enables brands to leverage AI technology to create more engaging customer experiences. The technology transforms advertising traffic into a high-performing channel that enhances customer satisfaction through relevant recommendations and interactions.

The startup has established its base in the Seattle region, where both Kuruvilla and Wang lead a growing team of professionals. Their approach represents a significant shift in how e-commerce platforms might handle personalization, moving away from traditional methods that rely on limited historical data.
