A San Francisco-based artificial intelligence startup has secured $20 million in Series A funding to expand its virtual companion app, Tolan, which pairs users with AI-powered alien characters designed to provide emotional support and conversation.
The funding round, spearheaded by Khosla Ventures with managing director Keith Rabois taking the lead, comes after Tolan’s successful iOS launch in February. The app, which has already garnered more than 3 million downloads and accumulated over 100,000 paying subscribers, is generating monthly revenue exceeding $1 million.
Portola, the company behind Tolan, matches users with their alien companions through a personality assessment. These digital friends, who hail from the fictional Planet Portola, engage in conversations ranging from everyday topics like meal planning to academic support and personal growth discussions.
Seattle-based CEO and co-founder Quinten Farmer, who previously led fintech startup Even before its $300 million acquisition by Walmart in 2022, emphasizes that Tolan’s impact extends beyond screen time. The company actively monitors how the app influences users’ sense of agency, self-confidence, and real-world relationship stability. A study involving 602 Tolan users revealed significant emotional benefits among frequent users who engage with the app multiple times weekly.
The startup’s leadership team includes CTO Evan Goldschmidt and President Ajay Mehta, who work alongside Farmer to develop and enhance the AI technology that enables these virtual companions to learn and evolve through user interactions.
Prior to this latest funding round, Portola raised $10 million in seed funding led by Lachy Groom, a former Stripe executive who co-founded Physical Intelligence. The company’s impressive roster of early investors includes notable tech figures such as former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, ex-Apple AI executive Daniel Gross, Replit CEO Amjad Masad, Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger, and AI industry veteran David Luan.
Currently, Tolan operates on a subscription model with various pricing tiers: $4.99 weekly, $10 monthly, or approximately $70 annually. The company plans to introduce a free version later this month, a strategic move that prompted the pursuit of additional funding to support the expected increase in users and AI processing costs.
The release of a free version marks a significant shift in Tolan’s accessibility, with the company preparing for increased platform engagement while managing the associated computational expenses of AI interactions. This expansion comes at a time when the role of AI in emotional support is sparking discussion, with some embracing virtual companions while others express concern about their impact on genuine human connections.
Portola maintains a lean team of 12 employees and is actively recruiting for engineering positions to support its growth. The company’s success reflects a growing trend in AI companionship applications, as more users seek digital solutions for emotional support and personal development.
The additional capital will help Portola scale its operations and continue developing its AI technology while maintaining the quality of user experiences. As the platform expands its reach with the upcoming free version, the company aims to make its unique form of AI companionship accessible to a broader audience while ensuring sustainable growth and technological advancement.
