A Vancouver-based climate technology company has secured $6.5 million in fresh funding while simultaneously announcing plans to facilitate the planting of 100 million trees across the globe within a five-year timeframe. Veritree, which specializes in reforestation verification through blockchain technology, is expanding its reach with projects spanning multiple continents.
The company’s restoration initiatives encompass diverse environments, including fire-damaged regions, mangrove ecosystems, terrestrial forests, kelp forests in marine settings, and agroforestry projects that combine tree planting with agricultural production. Current operations are distributed across several countries, with local partners executing projects in Canada, Haiti, Senegal, Kenya, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and various locations throughout the United States.
At the core of veritree’s operations is its innovative use of blockchain technology, which creates an immutable public record of tree-planting activities and restoration project details. The company employs a comprehensive monitoring system that combines satellite imagery, drone surveys, remote sensing equipment, and artificial intelligence to analyze project outcomes. In an innovative approach to ecosystem assessment, the company even monitors bird song patterns as an indicator of environmental health, while also evaluating the social impact of their initiatives on local communities.
Derrick Emsley, who serves as both CEO and co-founder of veritree, emphasized the crucial role of accurate data reporting in scaling nature-based solutions. “Corporate investment in natural restoration is increasing, but many organizations lack the technological capabilities to verify their environmental impact. This is where veritree fills a critical gap,” Emsley explained.
The company has deliberately positioned itself apart from the controversial carbon credit market by focusing on verifiable tree planting and survival rates rather than selling specific carbon dioxide removal credits. This approach helps avoid some of the challenges faced by other nature-based carbon removal initiatives regarding verification and quantification.
Veritree’s origins can be traced back to tentree, a sustainable clothing company that committed to planting trees for each product sold. The founders of tentree developed their own verification platform to track their reforestation efforts, which eventually led to veritree’s establishment as a separate entity in 2022.
The recent Series A funding round was spearheaded by Pender Ventures, with additional investment from Garage Capital, Northside Ventures, and Diagram. This latest investment brings veritree’s total funding to approximately $11 million. The company currently maintains a workforce of 60 employees.
The startup has attracted a diverse client base, including major technology companies like Samsung, retail businesses such as SleepCountry, and various enterprises in the hospitality sector. These partnerships demonstrate growing corporate interest in verifiable environmental initiatives.
Veritree’s technology platform creates transparency in reforestation efforts by providing companies with detailed tracking and monitoring capabilities for their funded projects. This level of verification addresses a critical need in the environmental restoration sector, where accountability and accurate reporting have historically been challenging to maintain.
Through its combination of technological innovation and environmental restoration, veritree is positioning itself at the intersection of climate technology and conservation. The company’s growth reflects increasing corporate commitment to environmental initiatives and the rising demand for reliable verification methods in nature-based climate solutions.
