Seattle-based real estate technology company Zillow reported strong second-quarter financial results, with total revenue reaching $655 million, marking a 15% increase compared to the same period last year. The company managed to turn its previous year’s losses into profits, posting $2 million in GAAP net income, an improvement from the $17 million loss recorded in the second quarter of 2024.

The company’s growth was primarily driven by its mortgage and rental divisions, which saw significant year-over-year increases. The mortgage segment experienced a 41% surge, generating $48 million in revenue, while the rentals business grew by 36% to reach $159 million. Zillow’s primary residential business unit also showed positive momentum, with revenue increasing by 6% to $434 million.

User engagement remained robust, with Zillow’s digital platforms attracting 243 million average monthly unique users, representing a 5% increase in traffic across its mobile applications and websites.

CEO Jeremy Wacksman expressed satisfaction with the quarter’s performance in his shareholder letter, noting that the revenue growth exceeded internal projections and outperformed the broader housing and mortgage market, which he described as “essentially flat” during the period.

Following these results, Zillow has revised its outlook for 2025, now anticipating mid-teens revenue growth for the full year, positioning their expectations at the upper end of their previous guidance range.

The company’s stock performance has been positive in recent weeks, showing more than a 15% increase over the past month. However, the earnings announcement was met with mixed market reaction, as shares initially declined by 6% in after-hours trading before recovering.

Despite the strong financial performance, Zillow continues to navigate challenges in the real estate technology sector. The company is currently involved in significant legal disputes with two major industry competitors. One lawsuit involves CoStar Group regarding copyright infringement allegations, while another legal battle with Compass centers around property listings.

The positive quarterly results come against the backdrop of a U.S. housing market that remains sluggish, making Zillow’s growth particularly noteworthy. The company’s ability to expand its revenue streams through diversified services like mortgages and rentals appears to be paying off, helping to offset potential challenges in the traditional residential real estate market.

The performance of Zillow’s various business segments demonstrates the company’s successful execution of its multi-faceted growth strategy. While the core residential business showed modest growth, the stronger performance in mortgages and rentals suggests that Zillow’s efforts to diversify its revenue sources are proving effective.

The company’s continued investment in its digital platforms appears to be yielding results, as evidenced by the increased user engagement. The growth in monthly unique users indicates that Zillow maintains its position as a leading destination for real estate information and services, despite intense competition in the space.

These results suggest that Zillow is successfully adapting to current market conditions while positioning itself for future growth. The company’s ability to generate profit in a challenging real estate environment, combined with its strong performance in complementary business segments, indicates resilience in its business model and effective execution of its strategic initiatives.
