Canadian telecommunications giant BCE’s subsidiary Bell Canada has reached an agreement to purchase Pacific Northwest internet provider Ziply Fiber in a transaction valued at approximately $3.6 billion. The acquisition marks Bell’s strategic expansion into the U.S. market, specifically targeting the Pacific Northwest region where Ziply has established a strong presence.

Ziply Fiber, headquartered in Kirkland, Washington, currently provides fiber internet services to over 1.3 million residential and business customers across four states: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Following the announcement, BCE experienced a significant market reaction, with its stock declining more than 10% during Monday trading.

The acquisition comes with ambitious growth plans, as Bell Canada has announced its intention to expand Ziply’s service coverage to reach more than three million locations within the next four years. This expansion strategy builds upon Ziply’s existing infrastructure and market presence in the region.

Ziply Fiber’s own history dates back to 2020, when it was established through a $1.35 billion acquisition of Frontier Communications’ Northwest operations. This initial formation was led by WaveDivision Capital, an investment firm run by Wave Broadband’s founder, in partnership with Searchlight Capital Partners.

Since its inception, Ziply has made significant strides in
infrastructure development, having constructed approximately 2,000 new fiber miles. The company has positioned itself as an industry leader, claiming to provide the fastest residential internet service in the United States.

The company’s leadership includes Harold Zeitz, who serves as CEO and brings experience from his previous roles as president of Wave Broadband and managing director at WaveDivision Capital. Steve Weed, who previously led Wave Broadband through its $2.36 billion
acquisition in 2018, currently serves as Ziply’s chairman.

Despite the ownership change, Ziply’s operations are expected to remain largely unchanged in the immediate future. A company
spokesperson has indicated that the Seattle-area workforce and operational structure will be maintained following the acquisition.

The deal represents a significant move in the telecommunications industry, bringing together Bell Canada’s established presence in the Canadian market with Ziply’s growing fiber network in the Northwestern United States. The acquisition aligns with the broader industry trend of telecommunications companies expanding their fiber infrastructure to meet increasing demand for high-speed internet services.

This transaction demonstrates the continuing consolidation within the telecommunications sector, particularly in the fiber internet space, as companies seek to expand their geographical footprint and service capabilities. The deal also highlights the strategic importance of the Pacific Northwest market in the broader telecommunications landscape.

The acquisition will allow Bell Canada to establish a significant presence in the U.S. market while building upon Ziply’s existing infrastructure and customer base. The planned expansion to reach more than three million locations indicates Bell Canada’s commitment to growing the fiber network infrastructure in the region.

For Ziply’s current customers and employees, the transition to Bell Canada ownership appears to be designed for continuity, with existing operations and local workforce arrangements expected to remain stable. This approach suggests a strategy focused on leveraging Ziply’s established market position while providing resources for future growth under Bell Canada’s ownership.
