Bezos Earth Fund Welcomes Corporate Leadership with New CEO Tom Taylor to Drive Climate Initiatives

The Bezos Earth Fund has appointed former Amazon executive Tom Taylor as its new president and CEO, marking a significant leadership change for the $10 billion climate initiative. Taylor, who retired from Amazon in October 2022 after more than 20 years with the company, most recently served as senior vice president of Amazon Alexa and held a position on the company’s senior leadership team.

The appointment represents a departure from the fund’s previous leadership strategy, which had primarily drawn from environmental sector veterans. Taylor succeeds Andrew Steer, who stepped down from the position in February after serving as the fund’s inaugural CEO. Steer, who came to the organization from the World Resources Institute, brought extensive experience in environmental policy and climate science across multiple continents.

Taylor expressed his enthusiasm for the new role on LinkedIn, highlighting the opportunity to combine long-term strategic thinking with technical innovation to address environmental challenges. He views the position as an ideal way to utilize his expertise while contributing to planetary welfare during what he describes as “Quarter 3” of his professional life.

During his tenure at Amazon, Taylor’s responsibilities included overseeing seller services, Amazon Payments, and Fulfillment by Amazon. His pre-Amazon career included positions as operations director at K2 sports and as an engineer at Delphi Automotive Systems.

The Bezos Earth Fund, established by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in February 2020, has already distributed approximately $2.3 billion in grants, working toward its goal of disbursing $10 billion by 2030. The fund’s initial grant-making began with $791 million distributed among 16 environmental organizations in its first year of operation.

The organization maintains a diverse portfolio of environmental initiatives, encompassing various sectors including land conservation, sustainable food systems, environmental justice, and low-carbon energy development. Additional focus areas include climate technology innovation, environmental monitoring and data collection, and sustainable financial markets.

The leadership transition follows several recent changes in the fund’s executive team. Charlotte Pera, who previously led the ClimateWorks Foundation and served as the fund’s vice president and deputy CEO, departed the organization in January 2024. Before his departure, former CEO Steer had praised the organization’s accomplishments in building a team of leading environmental experts and passionate professionals dedicated to the fund’s mission.

Taylor’s vision for the fund aligns with the organization’s ambitious environmental goals, as he emphasized the importance of combining innovation with practical execution to address global environmental challenges. His appointment by Bezos suggests a strategic shift toward leveraging corporate leadership experience in pursuing the fund’s environmental objectives.

The selection of Taylor represents a notable pivot in the fund’s leadership approach, bringing corporate executive experience to an organization previously led by environmental policy experts. This change may signal a new phase in the fund’s evolution as it continues to work toward its 2030 disbursement target and broader environmental impact goals.

Through his LinkedIn statement, Taylor expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos in implementing their vision for the fund. He acknowledged inheriting a capable team committed to the organization’s mission, suggesting continuity in the fund’s core objectives despite the leadership change.
