Dynamic Shifts and Innovations: Key Personnel Changes in the Pacific Northwest Tech Sector

Several key personnel changes and company developments have been announced across the Pacific Northwest tech sector. Former Google product management director Manish “Manny” Sainani has established a new venture called Hushh Technologies, which leverages artificial intelligence and statistical analysis to provide investment guidance. Sainani, who serves as the firm’s chief investment officer, is collaborating with Justin Donaldson, previously a data scientist at Salesforce, who has taken on the role of chief scientist and investment strategist.
This new enterprise operates independently from Sainani’s other startup, hushh.ai, which he launched in April 2023. That company focuses on helping clients maximize value from their data assets, including AI-driven monetization strategies. Sainani’s extensive background includes leadership positions at Splunk, where he directed machine learning products, and Microsoft, where he worked on Azure machine learning initiatives.
In other moves, Treasury4, a Spokane-based fintech company, has appointed Nathan Brown as its chief financial officer. Brown, who helped establish the company in 2020, previously served as its chief analyst. The startup, which develops tools for corporate finance professionals, was co-founded by Brown along with Steve Helmbrecht and Ed Barrie, all former employees of Itron. Brown’s tenure at Itron spanned more than 12 years, culminating in his role as director of global commercial financing programs.
Pioneer Square Labs has seen the departure of Leah Severe, its former operations director, who has launched Severe Consulting. Her new firm specializes in optimizing operational efficiency for early-stage startups. Severe’s history with PSL dates back to 2015 when the company initiated its startup studio, preceding her earlier role in user experience research at OnMobileMedia.
Significant changes have also occurred at ESS Inc., where founders Craig Evans and Julia Song have stepped down from the long-duration energy storage company. Since its founding in 2011, ESS has secured over $377.5 million in funding through venture capital and an IPO, with backing from prominent investors including Honeywell, Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, SoftBank Group, and BlackRock. The company’s innovative iron-flow battery technology, which utilizes readily available materials instead of scarce metals like lithium, has gained international recognition despite facing some production challenges. Song has transitioned to advisory positions on various boards.
In Seattle, pay equity analysis firm Syndio has strengthened its team with the addition of Stefan Gaertner as a pay equity consultant. Gaertner joins from Aon, where he worked as a partner in risk mitigation services. Syndio CEO Maria Colacurcio highlighted Gaertner’s extensive experience in people analytics and compensation strategies as valuable assets for the company’s mission to address pay transparency requirements and achieve equitable compensation practices.
These movements reflect the dynamic nature of the Pacific Northwest’s technology sector, with professionals and entrepreneurs continuing to innovate and adapt to changing market demands. The region’s ecosystem continues to foster new ventures while established companies evolve their leadership structures to maintain competitive advantages in their respective markets.
