Industrial manufacturing leader Fortive has appointed former Expedia Group chief executive Mark Okerstrom as its new chief financial officer, marking a significant leadership transition for the Everett, Washington-based conglomerate.

Okerstrom brings extensive experience from his 13-year tenure at Expedia Group, where he served in multiple executive roles including CFO, executive vice president of operations, and ultimately CEO. His most recent position was as president and chief operations officer at Convoy, a Seattle-based trucking marketplace startup that reached significant heights with a $3.8 billion valuation before its unexpected closure in 2023. Following his time at Convoy, Okerstrom worked as an advisor for Advent and Bain & Company.

The appointment comes at a pivotal time for Fortive, which recently announced plans to spin off its precision technologies segment into a separate public company called Ralliant. This strategic move has prompted various leadership changes and adjustments to the company’s board composition.

Fortive’s president and CEO James Lico expressed confidence in Okerstrom’s appointment, highlighting his track record of creating shareholder value through strategic growth initiatives and effective capital allocation. The company, which employs 18,000 people worldwide, specializes in technologies across various sectors including healthcare and building operations management.

Okerstrom will succeed Chuck McLaughlin, who is stepping down from his position as CFO and senior vice president after more than nine years of service. McLaughlin will remain with the company through 2024 in a non-executive capacity to ensure a smooth leadership transition.

The leadership change comes as Fortive continues to demonstrate steady growth, with the company reporting a 3% year-over-year revenue increase to $6.23 billion in 2024. The organization maintains strong ties to the Seattle tech ecosystem through its ongoing partnership with Pioneer Square Labs, a prominent startup studio in the region.

The newly announced spinoff company, Ralliant, will focus on providing specialized technologies for test and measurement applications, along with solutions for aerospace, defense, and space subsystems. This strategic reorganization reflects Fortive’s commitment to optimizing its business structure and enhancing shareholder value.

The announcement adds another chapter to Okerstrom’s distinguished career in the Pacific Northwest business community. His experience spans both the technology and transportation sectors, with significant achievements in financial management and operational leadership. At Expedia, he played a crucial role in the company’s growth and global expansion, while his subsequent position at Convoy provided additional expertise in managing rapid-growth technology companies.

Fortive’s selection of Okerstrom aligns with the company’s focus on innovative leadership and strategic growth. The conglomerate’s diverse portfolio includes technologies that support critical infrastructure across various industries, from university and warehouse operations to healthcare facilities. This appointment suggests a continued emphasis on financial discipline and strategic expansion under Okerstrom’s guidance.

The transition in financial leadership comes as Fortive continues to evolve its business model and adapt to changing market conditions. With Okerstrom’s appointment, the company gains a seasoned executive with extensive experience in both traditional and digital business environments, positioning it for continued growth in an increasingly technology-driven industrial landscape.

The timing of this leadership change coincides with Fortive’s broader organizational transformation, including the creation of Ralliant as an independent entity. This restructuring reflects the company’s commitment to optimizing its operations and maintaining its
competitive edge in the industrial technology sector.
