Jeff Bezos Leads Project Prometheus: A Game-Changer in AI for the Physical Economy

Jeff Bezos has assumed the position of co-chief executive at Project Prometheus, an artificial intelligence company shrouded in secrecy that has secured $6.2 billion in capital, positioning it among the most heavily funded emerging AI ventures, The New York Times reported.

This marks Bezos’ first return to a hands-on leadership position since relinquishing the chief executive role at Amazon in 2021. While he maintains the title of “founder” at Blue Origin, the aerospace venture based in Kent, Washington, his new position at Project Prometheus signals a more active involvement in day-to-day operations.

Information about the company remains scarce. The firm’s LinkedIn profile provides only a brief explanation of its mission: “AI for the physical economy.” Bezos serves not only as a leader but also as a financial backer of the venture.

The organization has already assembled a workforce of approximately 100 people and has set its sights on the computing, automotive, and aerospace sectors, the Times indicated. The location of the company’s main offices has not been disclosed.

Bezos shares leadership responsibilities with co-founder and co-CEO Vik Bajaj, an experienced professional in the life sciences sector who previously contributed to research initiatives at Google X, Alphabet’s experimental division focused on ambitious projects. Bajaj holds the position of managing director at Foresite Capital Management and also serves as co-founder and board member at Xaira Therapeutics, a biotechnology company operating facilities in Seattle.

The connection between Bezos and Amazon, where he remains the company’s founder and its largest individual stockholder, opens the door for possible partnerships between the technology behemoth and Project Prometheus.

Amazon might function as a client, research and development
collaborator, or infrastructure supplier for Prometheus’s
engineering-focused AI initiatives. Additionally, the startup stands to gain from Amazon’s established expertise in supply chain
management, automated systems, and operational frameworks.

Speaking at Italian Tech Week 2025 in Turin during a recent
conversation, Bezos recognized indicators of an artificial
intelligence “industrial bubble” while emphasizing that the technology would deliver substantial advantages to society.

“When the dust settles and you see who are the winners, society benefits from those inventions. The benefits to society from AI are going to be gigantic,” he stated.

The substantial funding round places Project Prometheus in an elite category of well-capitalized artificial intelligence startups, reflecting strong investor confidence in both the venture’s potential and Bezos’ leadership capabilities. The company’s focus on applying AI to physical industries represents a departure from the predominantly software-focused applications that have dominated recent AI
development.

Bajaj’s background in life sciences and experience at Google X suggests the company may pursue innovative approaches to integrating artificial intelligence with tangible, real-world applications across multiple industries. His dual role at both Foresite Capital Management and Xaira Therapeutics demonstrates deep connections within the investment and biotechnology communities.

The secretive nature of Project Prometheus aligns with a growing trend among high-profile AI ventures to operate discreetly during their formative stages, often to avoid competitive pressures and maintain strategic advantages. Despite the limited public information, the company’s substantial financial backing and high-profile leadership indicate ambitious plans for transforming how artificial intelligence intersects with manufacturing, transportation, and space exploration sectors.
