A maritime data collection startup emerged victorious at a recent pitch competition organized by Bellingham Angel Investors (BAI), showcasing innovative solutions from Northwest Washington’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem. Astraeus Ocean Systems, which aims to deploy autonomous vessels for gathering oceanic data, secured both the top prize and shared the audience favorite award at the event held at Whatcom Community College.

The competition, which distributed $10,000 in total prizes, featured twelve finalists selected from nearly 50 applicants across Whatcom and Skagit counties. The event marked what organizers hope will become an annual showcase of regional entrepreneurial talent in the area between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C.

Founded in 2022, Astraeus Ocean Systems impressed judges with its vision of creating an on-demand fleet of solar-powered autonomous surface vessels for collecting environmental data. CEO Alex Parker described the concept as an “Uber for ocean intelligence,” promising more efficient and cost-effective data collection compared to traditional methods. The company has already constructed three vessels and plans to begin Puget Sound trials this year, with paid pilot programs targeted for early 2025.

The $7,000 in combined winnings will enable Astraeus to purchase specialized equipment for detecting derelict fishing gear in Puget Sound, accelerating their pilot project timeline.

The competition’s second-place prize of $3,000 went to Tiny Steps, Big Leaps, a proposed childcare center focusing on infants through age three, scheduled to open in March 2025. Geo Garden Club, which developed an app for serious gardeners featuring crowdsourced local growing data, shared the audience favorite award with Astraeus.

Other notable participants included Synapse Software’s no-code business automation platform, CalmVista’s virtual reality anxiety management solution, and various enterprises spanning mental health services, gaming technology, and construction management tools.

BAI, established in 2005, typically invests between $2 million and $5 million annually in active years. The organization accepts monthly pitch applications and has expanded its investment scope nationally since the pandemic while maintaining strong regional ties.

The competition served multiple purposes beyond prize distribution. Participants received coaching and workshop opportunities, and the event facilitated connections within the local startup community. Jim Thompson, a founding BAI member, emphasized the importance of early engagement with startups, while judge Rhys Faler, who leads Innovate Bellingham, highlighted the event’s role in strengthening the regional innovation ecosystem.

The diverse finalist pool reflected Northwest Washington’s unique business landscape, featuring traditional tech startups alongside companies focused on agriculture, maritime operations, energy, and environmental technology. Judges evaluated entries based on overall business viability rather than specific industry criteria.

The competition aligns with other regional entrepreneurial
initiatives, including regular networking events and an upcoming Bellingham Startup Weekend in January. This growing momentum suggests an expanding startup ecosystem in Northwest Washington, bridging the gap between major tech hubs while maintaining its distinct character.

BAI’s ultimate goal extends beyond the competition itself, with Thompson expressing hope that some participants will progress to become investment-worthy ventures. The event demonstrates the organization’s commitment to nurturing local entrepreneurial talent while fostering sustainable business growth in the region.
