In a significant expansion of its Pacific Northwest presence, artificial intelligence leader OpenAI has announced the acquisition of Bellevue-based product development platform Statsig in a deal valued at $1.1 billion. The move represents a major strengthening of OpenAI’s foothold in the Seattle region, where it established its first office near Microsoft’s headquarters in late 2024.
Under the terms of the acquisition, Statsig will maintain its independence and continue operations from its Bellevue office location. The company’s workforce of over 100 employees will be offered the opportunity to join OpenAI while remaining in the Seattle area.
The deal highlights the growing importance of the Seattle region in the artificial intelligence industry. According to data from SignalFire, Seattle ranks second only to Silicon Valley in terms of AI engineering talent concentration in the United States. OpenAI appears to be tapping into this rich talent pool, with LinkedIn data showing approximately 169 current employees in the region and 18 open positions advertised for its Seattle office.
Madrona Venture Group Managing Director S. “Soma” Somasegar, whose firm was an early Statsig investor, emphasized the significance of OpenAI’s increased investment in the region. “They understand as much as anybody else the talent density we have,” he noted, speaking about OpenAI’s strategic decision to expand its Seattle presence.
The acquisition adds OpenAI to a growing list of over 100 technology companies that have established engineering centers in the Seattle area. The region has become a major AI hub, anchored by industry giants Microsoft and Amazon, along with substantial operations from Meta, Google, and other leading tech companies.
While OpenAI declined to specify current headcount figures for its Seattle operations, the Statsig acquisition represents a substantial commitment to growing its presence in the area. The move comes as the ChatGPT maker continues to expand its influence in the AI industry while leveraging the Seattle region’s established technology ecosystem and deep talent pool.
The strategic importance of the Seattle location is enhanced by its proximity to Microsoft, one of OpenAI’s key partners. This geographic positioning, combined with the region’s robust engineering talent base, positions the company to further strengthen its development capabilities while maintaining strong ties with its most important strategic ally.
