Outreach Streamlines Workforce Amid Tech Sector Challenges, Reinforcing Commitment to Sales Automation Innovation

Seattle-based sales automation company Outreach has implemented another round of workforce reductions, eliminating 9% of its staff positions across the organization. The latest cuts affect more than 65 employees worldwide, with the majority of impacts falling on go-to-market roles.
The company, which now maintains a workforce of 680 employees, is providing severance packages, continued benefits, and career counseling services to those affected by the layoffs. Despite the staff reductions, Outreach confirmed it will keep all its current office locations operational.
This reduction follows previous downsizing efforts at the company, including a larger round of cuts in September 2023 when 12% of positions were eliminated. The move reflects broader trends in the technology sector, which has experienced significant workforce contractions over the past two years. According to tracking website Layoffs.fyi, the tech industry saw more than 260,000 job cuts in 2023, with an additional 143,000 positions eliminated so far this year.
Since its founding in 2014, Outreach has built a substantial customer base of over 6,000 clients, including prominent names such as Zoom, Twilio, and McKesson. The company specializes in technology that enhances sales team effectiveness and helps organizations secure more business deals.
In the competitive sales engagement sector, Outreach faces competition from several players, including Salesloft, Apollo, and Clari. The company also contends with major technology corporations like Microsoft and Salesforce, which have developed their own sales process automation solutions. The industry is currently navigating the implications of generative artificial intelligence technology on sales automation processes.
Outreach has secured approximately $500 million in funding throughout its history and achieved a significant valuation milestone of $4.4 billion following a $200 million investment round in 2021. The company currently holds the top position on the GeekWire 200, a ranking of privately-held technology companies in the Pacific Northwest region.
The organization recently underwent leadership changes, with co-founder and former CEO Manny Medina stepping down from his position in September. Abhijit Mitra, who joined Outreach in 2023 as president of product and technology, has assumed the role of CEO.
The latest workforce reduction at Outreach comes amid ongoing economic adjustments in the technology sector, where companies continue to optimize operations in response to market conditions. The environment of higher interest rates and more conservative spending patterns has led many technology firms to reassess their staffing levels and operational strategies.
The sales automation sector remains dynamic, with companies like Outreach working to integrate new technologies and maintain
competitive positions while managing operational costs. As the industry continues to evolve, particularly with the emergence of generative AI capabilities, companies are adapting their business models and workforce structures to align with changing market demands and technological advancement.
Through these changes, Outreach maintains its mission of helping companies improve their sales processes and achieve better business outcomes, even as it adjusts its organizational structure to current market conditions. The company’s continued presence as a leader in the Pacific Northwest technology ecosystem underscores its significance in the regional business landscape, despite the challenges posed by ongoing market adjustments and competitive pressures.
