Seattle-based e-commerce operations platform Pipe17 has secured $15.5 million in Series A funding while simultaneously announcing the appointment of its first Chief Operating Officer, bringing its total funding to $25 million since its 2019 founding.
The funding round was spearheaded by LFX Venture Partners, with participation from existing investor GLP. This investment comes at a time when the company continues to expand its artificial
intelligence-powered platform that streamlines various aspects of e-commerce operations.
Kelly Goetsch, who joins Pipe17 as COO, brings significant industry experience from his previous role as chief strategy officer at commercetools, a German digital commerce company that has raised over $300 million in funding. Goetsch also has a notable background as the co-founder and leader of the MACH Alliance, an industry organization promoting microservices, APIs, cloud-based and headless technologies.
In commenting on his new role, Goetsch drew parallels between his experience at commercetools and the potential he sees at Pipe17. “When I joined commercetools, I saw a massive market opportunity to redefine how businesses power ecommerce via headless and composable commerce infrastructure — and we did exactly that. Now, with Pipe17, I see the same potential,” Goetsch stated.
The company, which launched just before the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent e-commerce boom, has developed comprehensive AI technology that addresses multiple facets of online retail operations. Their platform manages everything from supply chain operations and pricing strategies to order processing, inventory tracking, warehouse management, order routing, and delivery logistics.
Pipe17’s client roster includes prominent retailers such as Allbirds, Made In Cookware, Orthofeet, and MaryRuth Organics. The company has also established partnerships with major logistics providers, including Ryder, UPS, and FedEx.
The startup’s leadership includes co-founder and CEO Mo Afshar, who previously served as CEO of Spoken Communications, a Seattle-based company specializing in speech recognition technology for call center automation, which was acquired by Avaya in 2018. Dave Shaffer, who serves as co-founder and head of product, brings experience from positions at Oracle and Workato.
Currently, Pipe17 maintains a workforce of 58 employees. The latest funding round represents a significant milestone in the company’s growth trajectory since its inception in 2019, bringing its total raised capital to $25 million. This investment positions Pipe17 to further develop its technology and expand its market presence in the e-commerce operations sector.
The timing of this funding and leadership expansion comes as e-commerce continues to evolve and businesses seek more efficient ways to manage their online operations. Pipe17’s comprehensive platform approach to e-commerce management addresses the growing need for integrated solutions that can handle the complexity of modern online retail operations.
The addition of Goetsch as COO, combined with the fresh capital injection, signals a new phase of growth for the company. His experience in the e-commerce infrastructure space, particularly with MACH technologies, aligns with Pipe17’s mission to modernize e-commerce operations through advanced technology solutions.
The success of this funding round, led by LFX Venture Partners with participation from existing investors, demonstrates continued confidence in Pipe17’s approach to solving e-commerce operational challenges through their AI-powered platform.
