The Seattle Mariners have announced a groundbreaking partnership with Nintendo of America, marking the team’s first-ever jersey sleeve sponsorship deal. The collaboration will see two distinct Nintendo logos featured on players’ uniforms throughout the 2025 season, with different designs for home and away games.

During home games at T-Mobile Park, players will sport a red and white Nintendo racetrack logo on their jersey sleeves. For away games, the team will showcase the Nintendo Switch 2 logo, making the Mariners the first MLB team to implement different sponsorship patches for home and road uniforms.

The new partnership will make its official debut on March 27 when the Mariners face the Oakland Athletics in their Opening Day matchup at T-Mobile Park. All-Star centerfielder Julio Rodriguez has been named brand ambassador for the collaboration, featuring in a promotional video that playfully combines baseball and gaming elements. In the video, Rodriguez is shown discovering a red Mario cap beside his Mariners hat in his locker before delivering the line “Play ball” accompanied by classic Nintendo game music.

This partnership builds upon a long-standing relationship between Nintendo and the Mariners. The gaming giant’s connection to the team dates back to 1992 when Nintendo purchased the franchise under then-president Hiroshi Yamauchi. While Nintendo sold the majority of its ownership stake in 2016, it continues to maintain a minority position in the team.

Kevin Martinez, the Mariners’ President of Business Operations, emphasized the significance of this historical connection, stating that the jersey patches will serve as a reminder of Nintendo of America’s contributions to both the Pacific Northwest community and the baseball team.

The deal follows a growing trend in Major League Baseball, with most teams now securing uniform patch sponsorships. Industry reports suggest that the average value for such partnerships ranges from $7 million to $8 million annually. The most lucrative agreements in the league include the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays, which are believed to command annual rates in the low-to-mid $20 million range, while the Boston Red Sox’s deal is estimated at approximately $17 million per year.

The partnership represents a fusion of Seattle’s technological heritage with its sporting culture. Nintendo of America, headquartered in nearby Redmond, Washington, has been a significant presence in the region’s business landscape for decades. The new jersey patches create a visible symbol of this continued relationship between the technology company and the baseball team.

The announcement has already generated excitement among fans, with social media reactions reflecting the natural connection between Nintendo’s gaming legacy and baseball. One Reddit user cleverly referenced Mario’s famous catchphrase in relation to Rodriguez, commenting “It’s a me Julio.”

As the Mariners prepare for the 2025 season, this innovative sponsorship arrangement not only generates revenue for the team but also celebrates a unique corporate-sports partnership that has deep roots in the Pacific Northwest. The distinctive approach of featuring different logos for home and away games sets a new precedent in MLB jersey sponsorships, potentially influencing future deals across the league.

The combination of Nintendo’s global gaming brand with the Mariners’ baseball tradition creates a distinctive presence on the field, merging two entertainment spheres that have been intertwined in Seattle’s cultural fabric for over three decades.
