A Pacific Northwest aviation enthusiast has launched a unique 24/7 YouTube livestream offering viewers worldwide a stunning perspective of aircraft operations at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, set against the majestic backdrop of Mount Rainier.

The project, dubbed Rainier Aviation, is the brainchild of Burien resident Mitch Sutton, who discovered the perfect vantage point when he purchased his home northwest of the airport runways five years ago. Initially concerned about aircraft noise, the East Coast transplant found himself captivated by the combination of aviation activity and natural beauty, eventually becoming so accustomed to the sound that he now sleeps with his bedroom door open to hear the planes.

To capture the distinctive view, Sutton installed sophisticated equipment including two pan-tilt-zoom cameras with 600mm zoom capability and night vision functionality, mounted on a 10-foot rooftop mast secured by guy wires. The livestream incorporates real-time air traffic control audio, providing viewers with an immersive plane-spotting experience.

The channel has quickly gained traction since its launch, accumulating over 900 subscribers and 23,000 watch hours. During a recent Saturday, the livestream peaked at approximately 1,300 concurrent viewers. An active chat community has formed around the content, with aviation enthusiasts discussing aircraft types, flight destinations, and weather conditions.

“Being an enthusiast, I do look for plane-spotting channels, and Sea-Tac just didn’t have one,” explained Sutton, who balances the project with his full-time role as a human resources manager for a non-profit organization. The endeavor has required significant dedication, with Sutton rising at 3:30 AM to maintain and improve the setup.

Aviation media expert Isaac Alexander, who serves as chief content officer at Hype Aviation and edits Jet City Star, notes that the livestream’s positioning with Mount Rainier in frame makes it particularly special. “Not many airports globally have a
mountain/volcano nearby. Something peaceful about seeing airplanes flying with a large mountain in the background,” Alexander observed.

The channel joins a growing global community of aviation livestreams, with some channels attracting hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Seattle’s rich aviation heritage, including its Boeing connection and the presence of the Museum of Flight, makes it an ideal location for such content.

Beyond documenting commercial passenger flights, the stream provides insights into the region’s cargo operations and overall aviation commerce. The local plane-spotting community, which maintains several Facebook groups with hundreds of members each, has embraced the new addition to their viewing options.

Sutton complements his livestream operation with still photography, using a Sony DC-10 Mark IV to capture detailed images of aircraft with Mount Rainier as a backdrop, which he shares on his website and Instagram. Through running the channel, he has expanded his own aviation knowledge, learning about runway configurations and airport operations.

The project represents a confluence of Seattle’s technological innovation, aviation history, and natural beauty. “I don’t think any of us see Rainier and aren’t just inspired every time we see it, and feel incredibly lucky to have something like that,” Sutton reflected. “And I think it’s cool that Seattle really is an aviation city. It’s a great place to have a livestream that really represents that.”
