Two former employees of Jeff Bezos’ space company, Blue Origin, have embarked on a new venture called Actuate Ventures. Chris Le and Andrew Woodfield, the studio’s founding partners, aim to support startups specializing in space and other advanced technology industries.

Launched less than a year ago, Actuate Ventures has already forged connections with various stakeholders in the startup ecosystem. They are currently involved in SF Tech Week events and are actively seeking investments for their upcoming $25 million venture fund.

Le emphasized that Actuate Ventures goes beyond financial support. “We consider ourselves ‘co-founders in a box,'” he explained, describing their role as a hybrid of an incubator and a venture capital firm. “Our focus is on collaborating with entrepreneurs, not just providing funding.”

The venture studio model, exemplified by the likes of Madrona Venture Labs in Seattle, has proven successful in nurturing startups. However, Actuate Ventures differentiates itself by leveraging the expertise of its founders in space ventures and related technologies.

From biomedicine to materials science, Actuate Ventures aims to provide startups with access to a comprehensive ecosystem of resources, including specialized 3D printing, radiation testing, and deep space domain services.

“Our mission aligns with Blue Origin’s goal: to benefit Earth and its people,” Le stated. “We believe that space tech and deep tech advancements hold the key to addressing global challenges.”

Prior to their time at Blue Origin, Le and Woodfield excelled in product design, development, and user experience. This background serves as a solid foundation for their current roles at Actuate Ventures.

Exsai Technologies, a product studio, marks the genesis of Actuate Ventures. As a subsidiary, Exsai provides valuable services to Actuate’s portfolio companies, aiding them in website creation, market strategies, and more.

Actuate Ventures aims to not only invest in space and deep-tech ventures but also establish innovation hubs in key aerospace hubs: Redmond, Orlando, and Denver. These hubs will offer incubator and accelerator programs.

Le acknowledged that Actuate Ventures is still in its early stages, operating with a remote-first model and a team of around 15 individuals. However, their momentum is growing, and they have established a Future Council of experts to provide guidance on diverse technological areas.

With their combined experience and unwavering dedication, Le and Woodfield are building Actuate Ventures into a force within the startup ecosystem, fostering innovation and shaping the future of space and advanced technologies.
