The NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers have become pioneers in sports accessibility by implementing innovative technology designed to enhance the game experience for visually impaired fans. The team has partnered with Seattle-based startup OneCourt to provide haptic devices at all home games, making them the first professional sports organization to offer this technology as a regular feature.

OneCourt’s technology transforms live basketball action into tactile sensations that fans can feel through their fingertips. The system utilizes generative audio and haptic feedback to create a more immersive experience for blind and low-vision spectators. Working in collaboration with the NBA, the Trail Blazers have secured access to real-time gameplay tracking data, which powers the device’s
capabilities.

The decision to implement the technology full-time follows a successful three-game pilot program conducted at the conclusion of last season. The initiative addresses a significant challenge faced by visually impaired sports enthusiasts, who traditionally rely solely on audio descriptions that often lag behind the live action and may miss crucial spatial elements of the game.

The technology was developed by University of Washington alumni, including OneCourt’s CEO Jerred Mace. Speaking about the
implementation, Mace emphasized the company’s commitment to making sports accessible to everyone, noting that the pilot program demonstrated the technology’s ability to enhance the game experience regardless of the user’s age, background, or visual ability.

At Portland’s Moda Center, five OneCourt devices will be available for fans on a first-come, first-served basis through a partnership with Ticketmaster. Interested spectators can request reservations by contacting the team’s guest experience department via email. The devices can be accessed at various guest services locations throughout the arena, including stands at entry points A7, A24 on the 100-Level, and C23 on the 300-Level.

The initiative represents a significant step forward in making professional sports more accessible to all fans. Traditional audio descriptions, while valuable, often fail to capture the complete spatial dynamics of basketball games and can diminish the appeal of attending live events for visually impaired spectators. The haptic device addresses these limitations by providing real-time, tactile feedback that allows users to physically track the flow of the game.

The Trail Blazers, whose ownership remains with the estate of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, continue to demonstrate their commitment to innovation and inclusivity through this technology adoption. The laptop-based device serves as a bridge between the visual excitement of live basketball and the experience of fans who cannot fully access the game through traditional means.

The implementation of OneCourt’s technology at Trail Blazers games represents a potential turning point in how professional sports teams approach accessibility. By offering this technology at every home game, the organization has set a new standard for inclusive fan experience in professional sports, potentially paving the way for similar adoptions across other teams and leagues.

For visually impaired sports enthusiasts, this technology offers a new way to connect with the game they love, providing a more complete and engaging experience than what was previously available. The system’s ability to translate complex game action into understandable tactile feedback marks a significant advancement in sports accessibility technology, making the excitement of live basketball more accessible to a broader audience.
